Something in each hand!
I made sweet potatoes today and they turned out really good. I purchased 3 smallish potatoes, peeled them, cut them, and boiled them.
After they were done, I put half of the cooked sweet potatoes in the food processor with some water. It's better to use the water they cooked in, but I forgot and drained it. I eyeballed it and have no idea how much water I ended up using. I used a good sized food processor and they pureed very quickly. I cooked and pureed all the potatoes I had. These 3 sweet potatoes made 16 servings of baby food! And they were delicious. Next time I'll have to save some for myself. I thinned out the first batch a little more and that's what Jack will eat this week. The second batch is slightly thicker but still a pretty thin puree.
I bought these baby cubes at Buy Buy Baby. Each one is an individual serving and can be frozen and microwaved. I put 2 in the fridge (1 for tonight and 1 for tomorrow) and froze the rest. I like these cubes because they are separate containers and not one big tray and they have lids. Right now I'm going to introduce one new food a week, but once Jack is eating both fruits and veggies every day, I'll probably start using an ice cube tray. You put your puree in an ice cube tray to freeze and once it's frozen, you pop the food out and put each cube in it's own freezer bag that you can label. *Note: the white dots are water droplets on the outside of the cubes from when I washed them.
Stacked up nicely in the freezer
After Jack ate and took a nap, I got him ready to try his first sweet potato. I've been giving him cereal about every other night and he does ok with them. He loved the sweet potatoes!
Yummy!
Mmmm, that was gooood!
He didn't get very messy. In fact, this last picture is about as messy as he got. He ate most of what I gave him and hardly spit any of it back out. I'm so glad they turned out good and that he liked them. There were a lot of steps to making the potatoes, but overall it was very easy. I think it's going to be fun making my own food. And I'll probably end up eating more fruits and veggies myself! My plan is to introduce a new food every week and on the weekend I'll cook up a big batch of that food. I think I might do green beans or peas next week and then do a fruit the week after. What fun!
Have a great week!

Yum! I LOVE those baby food containers! I need to try and find some. It seems like they would be easier than ice cube trays in the short run, like you said. My freezer is small, so it would be nice to be able to squeeze them in here and there!
Asher had his first food this weekend (bananas) but sweet potatoes are next on our list.
Rene, thank you so much for your "recipe"! I have three giant sweet potatoes on my counter that have been intimidating me, but I have been wanting to cook them up for Jack...so great timing!
Love those containers too...we have a giant chest freezer thingie, so lots of space, but cute little containers make me happy. I think I will be making a purchase when we get back from vacation :)
This makes me excited to start my baby food cooking! I definitely need to get some of those containers also, though!
Hopefully my steamer will make it so I don't have to boil?? I'm a lazy cook these days.
I bought some baby food containers from Babies R Us and I hate them!!! I want yours! Buy Buy Baby is pretty far from me, but I think it will be worth the drive. Also, I have been going to the wholesome baby website to get recipe ideas for baby food. I think you might like it, if you haven't already heard about it.
