First Birthday and Turkey info

I am getting geared up for Jack's first birthday, which is only 4 months away now. That number 1 on the baby's age ticker is getting closer and closer. It's crazy! I already know that I want to have his party at the Little Gym since it'll be winter and our house is too small. Plus it'll keep the babies occupied! I need to take Jack to check it out and see if we even like it, but that is the plan right now. I even know what I am going to get him for his big present.

I'm going to get him the "oversized" chair so that it lasts longer from Pottery Barn Kids. And of course, I'll have his name put on it. Shh, don't tell him! I'd order it now if it was easier to hide and I thought I could keep it from him. I know I would give in and let him try it out early! I did buy him a little backpack and personalized lunch box for Christmas already though. Cute and practical! Now the question becomes, what theme will we use for his party?

I found an awesome website with tons of really cute ideas. I really like the Dino and Cowboy themes. But I also think the Quarterback, Mickey, and Monkey themes are super adorable! Right now, I'm leaning towards the cowboy theme because I've never seen anything like it and I think it'd be cute to have all the kids in cowboy hats. Before I buy anything online, I'm going to check out our local party store to see what they're offering. I know I have time, but if I find something I like I want to be prepared and not wait until the last minute.

The other thing I've been researching is the cake. I'm not giving Jack any sugar (not even juice!) for his first year and limited after that. Sometimes I think I'm being too strict with his diet, but he's a baby! He's not going to miss what he's never had and he doesn't need added crap in his diet. He has his whole life to make poor choices and right now, when he doesn't have a choice, I'm only going to offer him the best. I'm thinking of making him a homemade carrot or apple cake. I'm not quite sure, but I'll definitely have to make a test cake of whatever I decide on.

I know some of you other moms have already started thinking about this as well. What have you come up with? Are you even going to do a big party? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

And I know some of you were wondering how I made Jack's turkey. All I did was cook up some ground turkey in a pan, drain the liquid, puree it (adding a little bit of fresh water), and freeze in ice cube trays. Easy peasy! One package made 16 cubes plus the fresh turkey I gave him that night! I also have some ground chicken that I am going to cook up for him next. Oh, and I mix one cube of turkey (2 seems like too much right now) with one cube of a fruit or veggie. I've been using butternut squash and he loves it! I tried using a cube of cauliflower but with both being a thicker puree, it was too much for him and he gagged a little on it. Some parents fear SIDS or drowning, but my big fear is choking so I always watch out for that! He has been fine with the turkey other than that one time.

And what's a post without a cute baby picture? Here is one of Jack enjoying his delicious mango:

Yum...turkey and squash, sounds like a Thanksgiving dinner every night. Lucky Jack!

I'm thinking through birthday ideas too -- not sure what we're going to do just yet. Thanks for the website recommendation, hopefully it will give me some ideas!

Yes, we went to the Vera Bradley store in Tysons. If you want to come down to do some Christmas shopping this fall let me know and Asher and I can meet you over there (it's only 10 mins from my house). Asher loves to shop! :o)

Hey! I can't wait to start planning B's birthday party... i absolutely love planning that stuff so hopefully once things start to settle down a bit more around here, I will be able to enjoy getting into that fun stuff!!!! I am going to check out that website you posted and the ideas/themes sound super fun. What babies are you having to his party?? Unfortunately, B doesn't really have any baby friends. :( But maybe we'll invite a couple of my friends with older kids... or maybe it will be just a family affair. Grown-ups can wear silly hats too!! :) Ahhhhhhhhhhh are they really that old already?? :tear:

How funny...I Love Birthday express! I have used them since Cameron turned 1! I never had a party store close...so we just shopped there. Naturally I have been stalking it the last few weeks looking at all the 1st birthday Ideas. We are most likely doing the Mod Monkey! I already have the cake design planned too :) Hehee. I doubt we will do anything other than just a party at our house...but we will hopefully have his 2 buddies(who will turn a year 2 weeks before him) come and celebrate along with family. I can't believe it's already time to start planning!

Oh love the chair too! Looks comfy and it's super cute!

I love the Cowboy theme! I am not sure we are doing a huge extravaganza...most of my family will be in Texas for my cousin's wedding. So, I am thinking we will keep it pretty low key. We will certainly have cake, though. Yay!

I love those overstuffed chairs - I had one for Cassady when she was around that age. They were SO hard to find 10 years ago, now they are everywhere. Sigh.

We are doing a small family gathering on the weekend after her birthday, and a low-key birthday play date on her actual birthday (which you are totally welcome to bring Jack to - Wed 9/8 at 3pm). Not sure if there is going to be a theme or anything, just yummy food and cake! We will be just getting back from 2 weeks away for work, so things are going to be sort of thrown together.

I'm not sure how big our party is going to be - just a gathering of friends, hopefully D's family (they're kind of reclusive), and my parents are talking about coming from California! I'm probably going to do it at our house, so I don't want too many, or it'll be a major clean up!

Love that chair! Not sure what we're going to do. I was thinking maybe a little kitchen set - it seems kind of old for a one-year-old, but she loves to play with it at the girl's house so I figure that between 1-2, she'd use it?
