Things I don't want to forget

Jack grunts now. When he wants something (such as a cracker), and he's either not getting it fast enough or I've said no he will yell, "Cracker! CRACKER!" over and over. Then something comes over him and he grunts the same request in a low voice. It's actually quite funny and amusing. Sometimes I play with him and grunt back. I don't think he likes this very much!

He is super smart. I know all mom's say this and I know it's normal for them to pick up and learn so much at this age. But I'm still amazed by it. Jack knows all the letters of the alphabet except for A and V. He'll stop and point letters out everywhere we go. He does it on license plates, signs, books, anything with letters. We were in the car the other day (parked) and he randomly starting saying letters. I looked back and realized he could see a restaurant sign out the back window and was naming the letters. Amazing.

He also counts to 14 (usually skipping 5!). He's starting to recognize numbers now and he'll point and say, "numbers!". When he sees something and he's not sure what it is or just wants confirmation (whether it be a letter, number, animal, etc.), he'll ask, "what's this?", then point to something else and ask, "and this?" He wants to know what everything is and when you tell him, he nods his head in agreement like he knew all along!

We're still doing the Signing Time DVDs and I really think it's helped his vocabulary. He never just signs something. He always signs and says the word. But mostly, he just says it. I love the videos because each volume focuses on something specific (zoo animals, fruits, etc.) and they show the actual live thing and not just an animated version. He still loves them and I really enjoy watching with him and learning new signs too. The only other TV he really watches is PBS Kids. He loves Curious George, Martha Speaks, Sesame Street, and his favorite Super Why. When we first watched Super Why, it seemed like a show more for 3-5 year olds. If you're unfamiliar with it, it's a show about a group of kids (the super readers) who go to books to solve problems they have. They search for letters and when they have all the letters they're looking for, they get their answer. Well Jack loves it and he knows all their names and even some of the theme song. He also shouts out the letters when he sees them. It's awesome!!And I love PBS Kids not only because the shows are both entertaining (even to me) and educational, but because there aren't any commercials! What's not to love?

Jack shows off his best signing skills in the grocery store. I'm pretty sure one of his favorites things is cruising the produce section. He points out everything, saying the name and signing it. This boy loves fruit and he's a great eater. We went through a little bit of a picky phase, but now he's back to eating anything I give him. We've been doing a lot more soups and stews, and he gobbles up whole bowl-fulls! I used to be amazed that he could eat an entire banana for breakfast. Now he eats the banana and a bowl of cereal or oatmeal. And I love that he can eat completely on his own now (with minimal mess!).

Jack is starting to get into sports more. He has golf clubs that he loves and he now hits balls with them and says, "golfing." He throws and kicks balls really well too and shows an interest in both basketball and football. I think I'm going to sign him up for soccer next summer. I look forward to cheering him on! :)

He's still a fairly cautious kid, which I am completely okay with! No jumping off the couch or even trying to climb out of the crib just yet. He's also very gentle, which I love. Sometimes when he gets frustrated he throws his toys or pushes me away, but nothing crazy. He plays nicely with other kids and has never shown any violence towards anyone. Not even a scratch! I worry about other kids bullying him because he's so nice, but he's a big, strong boy. I don't think they'll want to mess with him. :) Plus, I really don't need to be worrying about those kinds of things just yet!

Jack is obsessed with cars. He loves all vehicles and points them out all the time. I recently got him a huge bag of toy cars (Matchbox, Hot Wheels, etc.) for $5 and he is crazy about them. I put them in a clear container to keep them off the floor. He takes them out one by one, lines them up, puts them in his bag, dumps them out, and just plays like this until I stop him. It's been great because it lets me prepare meals in peace. It used to be that he would come downstairs in the morning and immediately go into the kitchen wanting food. Now he goes straight for his cars! I have to pry him away most of the time. As long as he can bring his toy motorcycle to the table (or upstairs or to the car), he's okay with it!

He's also saying 2-3 word sentences now. It's super cute! Sometimes he takes a little pause between 2 words, like he's concentrating and trying to make sure he gets the second part exactly right. I really need to get this on video!

Jack is so eager to learn new things and figure out how stuff works. It's completely amazing to watch this little person do these things. I definitely stop to take the time to point things out to him and answer his inquiries. He's taught me to slow down and realize what's important! He teaches me as much as (if not more than) I teach him. I'm so grateful that I get to be his mama. :)

Notice the motorcycle under his right arm and the fire truck in his lap? These are his favorite of all his toy vehicles and he likes to know where they are at all times.

What a little smartie! I love that Jack is cradling his motorcycle - ha! Asher likes to point out letters too. It still always surprises me when he starts saying the letters in words that we see. No numbers here yet - go Jack!!

I am so super impressed that Jack knows all those letters!!! Sweet little Jack! He's going to be a gentle giant. Presley is the complete opposite. She will jump off of anything without thinking twice and don't get me started on her hitting. Love this post by the way:)
