April 9 was Jack's first day in underwear. He had been wearing pull-ups and staying dry all day, coming home wearing the same pull-up I had put on him that morning. So on April 9, I put him in a pair of underwear and dropped him at daycare. He came home dry! He has worn underwear every day since.
He wasn't telling us when he had to go potty, but throughout the day either me or daycare would sit him on the potty and he'd go. He's only had a total of 4 accidents in 2 1/2 months. I questioned whether I could really consider him potty trained if he wasn't telling us when he needed to go. He was staying dry and I didn't have to buy diapers and that's what mattered!
I was putting a pull-up on Jack to sleep in at night and I noticed that 9 times out of 10 he woke up dry. Sometimes he'd pee in his pull-up after waking up if I didn't get him to the potty quickly enough. At some point, after he'd been consistently waking up dry, I let him sleep in underwear. I don't remember when this started but it's been a couple of weeks now. He also started telling me when he needs to go potty. Whether it's first thing in the morning, in the middle of the day, or out in public, he now tells me.
Early this morning, at about 1:30am, I woke up to Jack mumbling something about wet pants. Oh no! His first nighttime bed wetting! To my surprise I then heard him very clearly say, "I need to go potty!" I sprung out of bed so fast, grabbed him, and rushed to the bathroom. I checked his pants and they were a tad damp. I sat him on the potty and he peed while I got him a new pair of underwear and pajama pants. They weren't soaked and his bed wasn't wet. I'm guessing he needed to go and a little escaped (enough to wake him), and he was able to wake up, stop it, and call out for me to take him to the potty before anything more serious occurred. The fact that he was able to stop it is awesome!
I'm so happy he's now telling us when he needs to go and I'm thrilled that I can put him to bed in underwear without worrying. I thought this process would be much harder than it has been and I always figured he'd be closer to 3 before being potty trained. I think what's worked for us is me being consistent without being pushy. I'm sure I haven't seen the last of the accidents, but I'm happy to be able to say that I've got a potty trained toddler! No more diapers, pull-ups, or even swim diapers! Hooray!!
Here he is on April 9, the first day he wore his dinosaur underwear (training pants):
He now wears big boy underwear from Gymboree. They have some cute designs and I stocked up when they were having a sale. My baby is growing up!

That's awesome!! We are almost there! He's in underwear all day at daycare, but still in a pull up at night. And he doesn't like poopin' on the potty... any suggestions for that?
But yeah, I LOOOOVE not having to pay for diapers anymore! I think I may just donate the leftovers to daycare.
Yay!!!! So proud of you, Jack!!! That's great news! We're almost there, but still will be sleeping in pull ups for some time (mainly because she sleeps in our bed, or we in hers, so accidents are even worse like that lol!).
That is so great, Rene! Jack IS sure growing up fast. They seriously need to slow down! I think it is amazing that he's not even 2.5 and he's fully potty trained. Great job Jack and great job mama for getting him trained so early and successfully!
